President Mnangagwa plans to open the rebuilt Mbare Market in two weeks after a big fire burned it down last November. This opening starts a big plan to build better markets all across the country. These new markets will give small business owners and sellers safe, clean places to work.
Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe shared this news with senators on Thursday. He said after the Mbare fire destroyed goods worth millions of dollars, President Mnangagwa asked his team to create a plan for new markets everywhere.
"We are looking beyond just Harare," Minister Garwe explained. The government approved the plan and decided to fix Mbare Market first as a test. After Mbare, they will build at Glen View Area 8 where many carpenters work and where fire also caused damage before. Then, they will move on to Sakubva in Mutare, Kwekwe, and other places.
Rural areas will also gain new markets. The aim is to help people who sell things on roadsides by giving them proper places to work. This follows the President's idea of making things better.
The new Mbare Market will have many helpful things for sellers and shoppers. Just the first part of the market will benefit about 1,600 people. It will have a bank, police station, offices, and good bathrooms. There will even be places for sellers to wash before handling goods.
Minister Garwe said these markets fit with Vision 2030, which aims to make Zimbabwe a well-developed country with high standards by 2030. People who lost their things in the fire, women, young people, and people with disabilities will get spaces to sell.
