MBS destroys 2,000 liters of unsafe drink flavors

The Malawi Health Equity Network praised the Malawi Bureau of Standards for destroying 2,000 liters of expired food flavors meant for fizzy and energy drinks. Some of the flavors had altered expiry dates. The bureau, working with Lilongwe City Council, seized the items from Zamm Investments and destroyed 583 twenty-liter gallons.

George Jobe, MHEN’s executive director, called the action vital for public health and consumer trust. He said it shows that safety must always come first. MHEN urged manufacturers to improve checks on raw materials and follow safety rules. It also asked local authorities to keep working with the bureau to inspect production and storage sites.

Jobe encouraged people and businesses to report suspicious products or products with altered expiry dates to officials. MHEN includes more than 100 civil society groups focused on fair access to quality health care in Malawi.
