Namibia just created special money to remember Hage Geingob, their former president. President Nangolo Mbumba showed off the new banknote yesterday during an event held at Windhoek. They made this money because Geingob helped their country tremendously before he died.
Geingob passed away on February 4, 2024, when doctors tried treating his cancer. President Mbumba spoke highly about him, calling him someone who built up the nation. The banknote keeps his ideas and work alive, serving as something people will remember about what he did for Namibia.
The money equals 60 Namibian dollars. People can actually spend it even though collectors might want to keep it since they only printed it once. Bank leader Johannes Gawaxab explained that Geingob spent exactly 60 years helping his country. His service included time outside Namibia, coming back home, and running the free nation.
Gawaxab mentioned the central bank plans to release completely new money designs by June. These bills and coins will have better security features that make them modern and hard to copy. Back in 2020, the bank printed its first special banknote worth 30 dollars when Namibia celebrated 30 years of freedom.
