MCMC grills Facebook user over Royal Institution fake news as probe sparks public uproar

Malaysian authorities are pursuing legal action against an individual who posted false claims about royal appointments on social media. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission targets Facebook content that wrongly suggested the Conference of Rulers reached preliminary conclusions about selecting a new Chief Justice. Officials describe these statements as harmful misinformation that damages both the legal system and royal credibility. Police questioned the suspect yesterday afternoon at the Dang Wangi district headquarters at 2:30 PM. The investigation proceeds under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which allows courts to impose fines up to RM500,000, prison sentences of up to two years, or both penalties combined. The commission warns citizens against distributing false information about religion, race, and royalty, emphasizing that such behavior threatens public stability and national unity.
