MCP MPs back Peter Dimba for Speaker of Parliament

The Malawi Congress Party selected Peter Dimba as its nominee for Speaker of the National Assembly ahead of Wednesday's parliamentary election. Party spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said legislators backed the former labor minister because he demonstrates reliability and strong principles necessary for the position.

Dimba thanked colleagues for their confidence and promised to protect parliamentary standards while advancing citizen interests. The nominee said he would support both lawmakers and administrative personnel if elected to lead the legislature.

The Democratic Progressive Party nominated Sameer Suleman, while People's Development Party leader Kondwani Nankhumwa also entered the contest. Newly elected lawmakers will take oaths on Monday and Tuesday before the vote occurs, with President Peter Mutharika scheduled to open Parliament on Friday.
