Mediheal Hospital sits almost empty nowadays. The once-busy hospital employed over 4,000 people before a kidney transplant scandal hit. Located on Nairobi Road in Eldoret city, the hospital was created by Dr. Swarrup Mishra, who served as MP for Kesses constituency. Dr. Mishra supported the Azimio party, and people knew him for giving lots of money to help others. His relationship with the Kenya Kwanza group went sour after some political changes.
Dr. Mishra became chairman of the Biovax board, but later faced problems about illegal kidney operations. A worker at the hospital told reporters that very few staff remain at the expensive facility. They mainly wait around for instructions because hardly any patients come through the doors. Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi wants officials to look deeply into claims about illegal kidney sales happening there. Many residents feel scared about these stories spreading across Eldoret.
Sudi spoke at a women's conference held at AIC Koilebel church about these serious issues. He believes matters about human lives need careful attention rather than becoming gossip. Human rights groups led by Kipkorir Ngetich also demand answers about what happened. Catholic Bishop Dominic Kimengich agrees that anyone involved in illegal kidney harvesting must face strong consequences.
