Meta's Superintelligence Labs lures AI talent with massive bonuses after metaverse flop

Meta offers extraordinary compensation packages to attract artificial intelligence researchers from competing companies. The social media corporation provided a former Apple executive with a $200 million signing bonus for joining their AI division. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis believes Meta pursues this aggressive recruitment strategy because they lags behind competitors in artificial intelligence development. He considers their approach rational, given their current market position. Meta established Superintelligence Labs to accelerate their AI capabilities through talent acquisition.

The leaked employee roster reveals that half of the 44 team members have Chinese backgrounds, while 40 percent previously worked at OpenAI. Some researchers reject these lucrative offers, prioritizing their company missions over financial incentives. Anthropic co-founder Benjamin Mann confirmed that Meta approached his employees with similar proposals, though his team declined the opportunities. Google DeepMind implements non-compete agreements that prevent UK employees from joining competitors for twelve months after departure.
