Mhlanga's FAO gives phones to transform Rwanda agriculture

The Food and Agriculture Organization worked with Rwanda's Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources to host a Digital Village twinning event through the FDiVi project. Over 130 people attended from farmer groups, businesses, and government departments. Forty-eight farming cooperatives shared their experiences with digital tools during peer learning sessions. Leaders from Musanze, Nyanza, Ngororero, and Nyagatare districts discussed expanding digital agriculture programs. These officials promised to add the project to their regional development plans.

Acting FAO Representative Nomathemba Mhlanga praised digital ambassadors who help farmers learn new technologies. She emphasized that local authorities must connect government policies with real-world applications. The organization gave 99 smartphones to chosen farming cooperatives at an awards event. One recipient, Nyirabakiga Immaculée, said the phone would help her cooperative access markets and information. The FDiVi project started in April 2024 and assists 150 farmer groups in Malawi, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe through digital platforms.
