Michael Bennet arms Guyana to trap Maduro in Essequibo showdown

Colorado Senator Michael Bennet has proposed legislation to enhance American security partnerships with Guyana amid escalating Venezuelan aggression. The Democratic lawmaker serves on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and designed the bill to mandate Defense Department evaluations of current military cooperation. Bennet emphasized the need for deterring Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro's continued threats against Guyana. The proposed measure requires formal congressional reporting on defense collaboration between the two nations. Officials must assess whether additional assistance would help Guyana counter potential Venezuelan attacks.

Maduro's administration has intensified territorial claims over Guyana's Essequibo region through military overflights and threats against oil infrastructure. Venezuelan forces recently conducted controversial elections within the disputed territory and installed regional officials. Washington considers these actions hostile and unlawful violations of international law. Both Biden and Trump administrations have increased diplomatic and security support for Georgetown. The escalating dispute has prompted bipartisan congressional concern about regional stability.

Arizona Senator Mark Kelly joined Bennet as co-sponsor after reviewing the legislation through his Intelligence and Armed Services Committee positions. Guyana's emergence as an oil producer has elevated its strategic importance for American interests. The South American nation's crude exports assist European efforts to reduce Russian energy dependence following Moscow's Ukrainian invasion. Bennet previously authored the VALOR Act with Republican Senator Jim Risch to promote Venezuelan democratic reform. The Colorado senator also co-leads the Americas Act with Senator Bill Cassidy to counter Chinese regional influence.
