Microsoft Plans Major Xbox Layoffs, Central Europe Operations Affected

Microsoft plans to cut many jobs from its Xbox division next week. The Verge reports the company wants to change how Xbox works across Central Europe. Some Xbox operations will stop completely in certain areas. Bloomberg writer Jason Schreier says the cuts will be major. He calls them substantial but does not know exact numbers.

The layoffs will happen across all Xbox teams and game studios. Microsoft often announces bad news near the end of its business year. The company's fiscal year ends on June 30. This marks the fourth round of major job cuts at Xbox since early 2024. The gaming industry has faced constant layoffs since 2022.

Microsoft fired 1,900 workers in January 2024 after buying Activision Blizzard King. The company later closed four game studios under ZeniMax. Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Roundhouse Studios and Alpha Dog Games all shut down. Nearly 400 more developers lost jobs at California studios months later. Other companies like EA have made similar cuts this year.

Thousands of game developers have lost work over the past few years. Company leaders made poor choices during the pandemic when gaming grew rapidly. Hypixel announced it would close just yesterday. The gaming industry continues to struggle with these problems. Many hope affected workers find new jobs quickly.
