Minister Mavetera highlights AI’s role in Zimbabwe’s future

Zimbabwe's minister for information technology told defense officials that artificial intelligence offers transformative potential for economic growth, healthcare improvements and national security advancement. Tatenda Mavetera addressed the National Defence Course at Zimbabwe National Defence University in Harare on Monday, emphasizing that adversaries are rapidly deploying these technologies in ways that pose unprecedented threats to sovereignty and economic stability.

The government plans to develop a comprehensive national AI strategy following the Zimbabwe AI-RAM report launch, positioning the technology as central to achieving development objectives under President Mnangagwa's Vision 2030 framework. Mavetera warned that strategies created without broad consultation risk deepening inequalities or failing to address specific domestic priorities.

The ministry has established platforms for deploying AI models and created searchable repositories of tools and datasets to support adoption across government sectors, agriculture operations and public service delivery systems.
