Vance Boelter faces serious charges after shooting two state lawmakers and their families last Saturday. The 57-year-old man killed one couple and hurt two other people during separate attacks. Court papers reveal Boelter had prepared his wife for what he called a bailout plan. His family considered themselves preppers who stored supplies for major disasters. Boelter told his wife to go stay with her mother across the border.
Police stopped Boelter's wife and four kids as they left their Lake Mille Lacs home. Officers found two guns, passports and ten thousand dollars cash during a car search. Boelter had sent his family a text message warning them to leave the house fast. He wrote that armed people might come looking for them. The message also said Dad went to war the night before.
Federal agents discovered notebooks filled with names of more than 45 government officials. Most of these politicians belonged to the Democratic party. Boelter had rented a storage space where he kept empty gun cases and cleaning gear. He also bought an electric bicycle and a car from someone who helped him escape. The manhunt lasted 43 hours before police caught him.
State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark both died at their house. Another couple survived their injuries but needed hospital treatment. Yvette Hoffman took eight bullets but doctors released her Thursday night. Her husband John serves as a state senator and remains hospitalized after taking nine shots.
