Mnangagwa courts losing MPs to lock in party grip

President Emmerson Mnangagwa hosted defeated ZANU-PF parliamentary candidates from the 2023 elections at his Kwekwe agricultural property to discuss maintaining party strength in opposition-held areas. The session followed a written appeal from a Bulawayo representative requesting support to keep the ruling party active in his district between formal campaign cycles.

Party officials characterized the gathering as strategic outreach designed to prevent defections and demonstrate commitment to members regardless of election results. Attendees received opportunities to voice frustrations and hear directly about national economic targets for 2030. The president emphasized organizational principles and offered counsel on navigating internal party relationships.

An anonymous participant expressed gratitude for the direct engagement and said Mnangagwa strengthened bonds with grassroots operatives. Sources within ZANU-PF said the meeting reinforced the leadership's policy of comprehensive inclusion across all regions and reflected efforts to maintain cohesion heading into future electoral contests. The shadow legislators argued that sustained constituency work would improve electoral prospects by avoiding rushed last-minute organizing efforts.
