Mobile money agent shot dead in Mukono robbery spree

TL;DR: A mobile money agent was shot dead by armed robbers in Mukono District, sparking fears of a rising wave of violent robberies in the area.

Residents of Nabuta village in Mukono District were left in shock Thursday evening after Peter Ssekamate, a mobile money agent, was fatally shot by two armed assailants who robbed multiple businesses at the trading center. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen moved from one outlet to another, demanding cash. Ssekamate allegedly asked them who they were before being shot after complying with their demands.

The village chairperson, Ssenyonga Kyeyune, attributed the attack to a gang believed to be from the neighboring Kirowooza village and noted that armed robberies targeting mobile money agents and shops had become increasingly frequent in the area. Kyeyune called for more police presence to address growing fears among local traders.

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway, with security agencies reviewing CCTV footage and intelligence to track down the suspects. The attack follows a series of similar incidents in nearby districts, including Kasangati and Kakiri.
