Modi builds highway for Assam's clumsy animals

India will construct a 34.5-kilometer elevated highway through Kaziranga National Park to protect wildlife while expanding the road corridor. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the 6,957 crore rupee project on Wednesday to widen the 85.675-kilometer Kalibor-Numaligarh stretch of NH-715 in Assam to four lanes. The elevated section will enable animals to cross safely between the park and the Karbi-Anglong Hills during monsoon floods, when they migrate to higher ground.

The project will add 21 kilometers of bypass roads around Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat towns and upgrade 30.22 kilometers of existing pavement. Officials expect the work to create 15.42 lakh direct jobs and 19.19 lakh indirect employment opportunities. The improved highway will connect Guwahati, Kaziranga National Park, and Numaligarh while linking to three railway stations and three airports. Heavy traffic on the current two-lane road has caused frequent vehicle strikes that kill wild animals crossing between protected areas.
