Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India's para-athletes after they captured a record 22 medals at the World Para-Athletics Championships held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from Sept. 23 to Oct. 5. The contingent secured six gold, nine silver, and seven bronze medals in their strongest showing at the event. Modi stated the achievement would inspire many people, and he expressed pride in the entire team.
India previously earned nine medals at Dubai 2019, 10 at Paris 2023, and 17 at Kobe 2024. The championships featured more than 2,200 athletes from over 100 nations competing in 186 medal events. Government support programs proved effective as 15 athletes from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, and one from Khelo India, finished among medal winners at the competition.
