Modi's tree talk in Guwahati sparks Assam's wild blossom wave

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently shared memories of a transformative moment during a 2016 Guwahati rally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spotted a distant Krishna Chura tree while seated beside the then Chief Minister during the public gathering. Modi recommended expanding the cultivation of these red-flowering trees throughout Assam to enhance tourism and regional identity. The suggestion sparked an ambitious environmental initiative targeting ten crore new plantings. Sonowal successfully established 9.5 crore trees during his administrative period.

The plantation effort evolved beyond government policy into widespread community participation. Citizens began incorporating tree planting into personal celebrations and religious festivals. This grassroots adoption transformed environmental conservation into a cultural tradition across the state. Sonowal described the experience as profoundly meaningful, illustrating how simple observations can lead to significant social change. The initiative provided Assam with both environmental benefits and strengthened regional character.
