Mombera University finally breaks ground after a 10-year wait

After sitting around for over ten years, that stalled Mombera University plan in Mzimba District might actually be happening. Malawi's Second Vice President, Enock Chihana, just gave contractors a hard deadline to cough up a modern design by late January, with building set to start right after. He told investors and local leaders this is a big national project, claiming it will boost education and the economy in the north. The goal is to open for students by 2027.

Education Minister Bright Msaka called it a national dream, finally getting real. They are funding the whole thing through a setup where private sector money teams up with the government. The school is supposed to focus on job-ready training for stuff like animal science and mining. A financial group called NICO is reportedly in those partnership talks.

The local chief, Inkosi Ya Makosi M'mbelwa V, said people are hopeful again after so many political holdups. Everyone is waiting to see if any actual construction starts by next month, or if this is just more talk. The entire project hinges on hitting those deadlines, which have been moved more times than anyone can count.
