Monsoon Rains in Punjab Claim 21 Lives, Cause Widespread Damage and Displacement

Monsoon rains have killed 21 people and hurt 57 others across Punjab this year. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority shared these numbers after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz asked for a report. Children made up 11 of the deaths, women accounted for 3, and men totaled 7. The storms also damaged 27 homes either partly or completely. Officials recorded rainfall during the past day across ten cities.

Most people died when old mud houses and weak buildings fell down on them. Lightning killed two people from Khanewal and Okara districts. Electric wires caused the deaths of two children from Mandi Bahauddin. Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said families would receive money from the government to help them. He expects the first round of monsoon rains to last through July 1.

Water levels remain normal across all rivers and dams right this moment. Kathia warned that major cities like Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala might flood. City officials stay ready for emergencies and have orders to drain water from low areas quickly. The disaster management office watches the weather conditions every hour of every day.

The Punjab government banned swimming and bathing near rivers, canals, and storm drains. People who break this rule will face serious punishment. Citizens should avoid traveling during bad weather and stay away from power lines. Emergency teams ask people to call 1129 if they need help during storms.
