MONUSCO Shells M23 Rebels as Goma Faces Intense Threat

UN Peacekeepers Shell M23 Rebels Near Goma.

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jan. 24, 2025 - UN peacekeepers have shelled M23 rebel positions near Sake. They want to stop the group from moving toward Goma, the capital of North Kivu.

MONUSCO is working with Congolese and Southern African forces, a major step forward in the fight to secure the region.

"In the past 48 hours, MONUSCO heavy artillery fired on M23 positions in Sake," MONUSCO said on Friday.

The goal is to secure key areas, protect civilians, and halt M23's expansion.

The attack follows the death of Major General Peter Cirimwami. He was North Kivu's military governor. He died from injuries on the front line near Sake.

MONUSCO has moved forces around Goma. It is patrolling with FARDC day and night to strengthen defenses.

The mission is to help FARDC with heavy artillery and attack helicopters. They have destroyed M23 equipment.

MONUSCO's Rapid Reaction Forces (QRF) are fighting alongside FARDC and SAMIDRC troops in Operation Springbok 3.

The fighting has been fierce. Nine peacekeepers were hurt in the past two days.

"MONUSCO is determined to protect civilians and support Congolese forces against M23," the statement said.

The M23 advance on Goma has recently displaced over 250,000 people. Many are fleeing toward Goma, Kalehe, and Rusayo.

MONUSCO stressed the urgent humanitarian needs. It called for an immediate end to fighting.

The UN wants M23 to stop its offensive, leave occupied areas, and follow the July 31, 2024 ceasefire.

It urged a quick return to the Luanda peace talks led by Angola's President João Lourenço. The goal is to find a lasting solution.

President Tshisekedi told FARDC to increase operations to push back the rebels.

"The President has ordered tracking down the aggression forces to their last stronghold," said Major General Sylvain Ekenge, FARDC spokesman.

He called Cirimwami's death the loss of a "valiant fighter" who "defended the homeland to the supreme sacrifice."

President Tshisekedi announced a national funeral for the military governor. This aims to unite the nation and boost military resolve.
