When you record a Session performance into Ableton's Arrangement, Live logs the clips you launched, your mixer and device moves, and any tempo changes.
That is a stranger thing than it sounds. Nothing is bounced. The Arrangement fills up with a log of decisions rather than a bounce of sound, which is why you can go back and change your mind about any of it afterward.
Most producers find this out by accident, usually after assuming the capture froze their jam in place. It did not. Understanding what the capture writes down, and what it silently leaves out, is the difference between a timeline you can keep working on and one you end up fighting.
The consequence is that Session clips and Arrangement clips stay independent of each other. You can improvise the same section into the timeline five times without destroying anything, because the two sets of material never overwrite one another.
Live even tells you when the two have diverged. A Back to Arrangement button lights up to say that what you are hearing is not what the timeline holds. That indicator is doing more work than most people realize, since it is the only thing standing between a good take and a confused one.
None of this makes sense until you take the way pattern and linear workflows seriously have merged inside modern DAWs, because the capture step is the joint that merge left behind. Every DAW had to invent one, and no two inventions behave alike.
There is a hard limit worth knowing before you start. You cannot record into a cell while you are recording a Live Loops performance. You can still track vocals or a live instrument onto separate tracks at the same time, so the restriction is narrower than it first appears.
The genuine trap is quieter. Stopping a cell does not hand the track back to your existing regions. They stay inactive until you reach for the Divider column buttons or a key command and reactivate them yourself.
So a track can sit silent while you stare at perfectly good material on the timeline wondering what broke. Nothing broke. The grid still owns that track, and it will keep owning it until you take it back by hand.
Studio One Pro 7 sidesteps the problem in a different way, capturing Launcher performances straight onto the timeline while both views stay on screen. Same destination, very different route.
Live's Clip Quantization setting applies an onset timing correction when a clip is triggered. Set it to one bar, and every launch you make lands on the next bar line no matter where your finger fell. The timeline then records the corrected position, not the human one.

Loosen the quantization to a sixteenth or turn it off entirely before you record, and the log picks up your actual timing, warts included.
