Moyo sacks NSSA board over general manager appointment

Zimbabwe's Public Service Minister Edgar Moyo removed all board members from the National Social Security Authority on Tuesday. The firing ended months of fighting about who should lead the agency. Emmanuel Fundira had served as board chairman and runs Astoc Leisure Group as a safari hunting operator. The minister also dismissed Merjury Chinyemba, Shepherd Mundondo, Tarusenga Chitemere, and Grace Mathe. Other removed members were Timothy Nherudzo, Chipo Ndudzo, and Beatrice Ncube.

The conflict centered on Charles Shava becoming the new General Manager in March. Shava had worked as Director for Occupational Safety and Health before taking the top job. The General Manager position had stayed empty for almost three years since July 2022. Ministry sources said Fundira fought hard against Shava's appointment. The former chairman wanted to place his preferred person in the role instead.

Fundira's choice would have restarted a failed software project worth 10 million dollars. Twenty Third Century Systems had worked on the deal before it stopped during setup. The disagreement between Fundira and the minister grew worse behind closed doors. Moyo decided to support Shava and ignore the board's wishes. The minister has the power to pick new board members from lists sent by worker and employer groups.
