Moyo tells libraries to ditch books for STEM and makerspaces

Zimbabwe's education minister called for library modernization during the 58th Annual Zimbabwe Library Association Conference in Nyanga on Wednesday. Torerayi Moyo urged facilities to establish makerspaces for hands-on technology training and STEM education. These changes would prepare students for rapid technological advancement while supporting entrepreneurship development.

Moyo emphasized that libraries should provide free digital resources through open-access databases. The initiative aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa's Vision 2030 development strategy. Libraries can bridge information gaps and enhance digital skills among learners.

Manicaland Provincial Affairs Minister Misheck Mugadza highlighted how information centers support Sustainable Development Goals. Libraries promote literacy, research and business knowledge while creating equal opportunities for communities. Lindiwe Mupindiwa assumed the association presidency during the conference.
