MP Cashes in Fuel Deal, Zim Fumes

Zimbabwe government paid 4.2 million dollars to Betterbrands Petroleum last week. Scott Sakupwanya owns the fuel company and serves as a Member of Parliament for the ruling party. Finance Ministry official George Guvamatanga approved the payment instruction on May 30th. The Treasury transferred money from government accounts to Sakupwanya's business bank account. Investigative reporters published the payment document on social media Monday.

Citizens questioned the transaction because the state operates Petrotrade for fuel purchases. Many people criticized the deal as favoritism toward politically connected businesses. Neither Sakupwanya nor Guvamatanga responded to media requests for comment about the payment. Government departments previously bought fuel from private companies rather than the state supplier. Some defended the practice as normal business operations for competitive pricing.

Social media users expressed anger about transparency and fairness concerns. One former Petrotrade worker said government departments avoided the state company except for credit purchases. Critics accused officials of corruption and misuse of public funds. Others defended the transaction as standard procurement procedures. The controversy highlights ongoing debates about government spending and political connections.
