MP Questions President Mahama's National Day of Prayer Amid Economic Struggles

A member of parliament has attacked President Mahama over his new prayer day plans. Professor Kingsley Nyarko from Kwadaso thinks the July 1 National Day of Prayer will damage the country's work output. He believes Ghana cannot afford another day off when money problems keep getting worse. The president wants people across the nation to pray and give thanks on this special date. Nyarko admits prayer days sound good but questions the timing choices.

President Mahama recently brought back Republic Day and Founder's Day as official holidays. Many political groups cheered these moves and praised the president for honoring history. The Convention People's Party and other Nkrumah supporters felt especially happy about the changes. These new holidays join the prayer day as extra time off work for citizens. The professor worries about losing productive hours during tough economic times.

Nyarko spoke to OTEC News reporter Elizabeth Gyamfua Fosu about his concerns. He suggested combining the prayer event with Founder's Day celebrations instead of creating separate occasions. The professor thinks back-to-back holidays will hurt both government offices and private businesses. He fears other leaders might copy this pattern and add even more non-working days. Smart planning could have made the prayer more powerful and saved valuable work time.
