MPs Roar Over DC Embassy Shutdown Mess

Opposition lawmakers attacked the government for closing Ghana's embassy in Washington D.C. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa shut down the mission through a Facebook post on May 26. Parliament members called the move a needless embarrassment that hurt the country's reputation. Samuel Jinapor from the Foreign Affairs Committee signed a statement criticizing the decision. The opposition said the minister acted without talking to Parliament first.

The embassy reopened after three days of closure. Lawmakers said this quick change proved the decision was poorly planned. Foreign Minister Ablakwa suspended all local workers and sent home diplomatic officers. The opposition called these actions unfair to professional embassy staff. They said the minister's moves hurt the morale of Ghana's diplomatic workers.

Opposition members worry about plans to move all foreign service officers who worked at posts for more than two years. This mass transfer could cost the government millions of dollars. Moving so many people at once would create expensive relocation bills. The minority party wants the ministry to fix Ghana's damaged international image. They promised to watch how the government handles foreign policy decisions.
