MTN Ghana Invests Over GHS17.6 Million to Advance Girls' ICT Skills

MTN Ghana has put more than 17.6 million Ghana cedis into a program that teaches girls about computers and technology. The Girls-In-ICT program has helped over 15,000 girls learn digital skills across Ghana. MTN works with the government ministry that handles communications and technology to make this happen. The company wants to help close the gap between boys and girls when it comes to learning about computers. This effort began in 2021 and has grown each year.

The program teaches girls between ages 9 and 15 how to use computers and technology. Each year focuses on different topics like connecting girls to technology and teaching leadership skills. More than 1,200 teachers have learned how to teach these skills to students. The company has built 197 computer centers at schools to help students keep learning. Girls from poor areas and those with disabilities can join the program.

MTN gives laptops to the top 100 girls who do well each year. The company brings the best students to Accra for a week of special computer training. Women who work in technology and government teach these girls during this special week. The program has helped girls from rural areas learn skills they need for future jobs. Some girls who joined early are studying computer science at universities.

MTN supports other technology education programs through its Foundation. The company has helped 30 schools build computer labs and robotics centers. One school won a world robotics competition two times after getting help from MTN. The company plans to spend 2 million more cedis on the program next year.
