Mudslide tragedy grips Elgeyo Marakwet

Authorities in Kenya have deployed police and military helicopters along with medical teams and Red Cross personnel to support search and rescue operations in Elgeyo Marakwet County after mudslides claimed more than twenty lives. At least seventeen bodies have been recovered, and dozens remain unaccounted for.

Paul Yatich, member of the county assembly for Embobut, said six bodies were found in his constituency while eleven others were discovered elsewhere in the Kerio Valley. The toll has risen as teams continue to comb the heavily affected area.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen offered condolences to families in Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut wards in Marakwet East Constituency, where roads and other infrastructure were destroyed. He said his prayers were with those coping with loss and damage.
