MUHAS expands as thousands miss med school shot

Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences will dramatically expand medical training capacity through a 120 billion shilling infrastructure program scheduled for completion by June 2026. Vice Chancellor Appolinary Kamuhabwa announced on Monday that construction has reached 50 percent at the Mloganzila medical college site and 35 percent at a new Kigoma regional campus.

The project addresses severe enrollment constraints that currently allow admission for only one qualified candidate among every 31 applicants. During the current academic cycle, just 235 students gained entry from 5,395 medicine program applicants. Officials revised 83 curricula and launched 23 programs to strengthen health professional training and reduce overseas medical expenses for citizens.

Facilities under development encompass dormitories, libraries, research centers and digital systems funded through World Bank support. Yasinta Mkandawile, a Mpakani resident near the Mloganzila construction zone, credited the initiative with generating local employment and commercial activity. The Higher Education for Economic Transformation effort positions advanced learning as an engine for national development across economic, social and technological sectors.
