Murder Suspect Challenges Unconstitutional Detention

Woman Fights Prison Rules in Gambia Murder Case.

A woman held for killing her partner wants to change where she stays in prison. Kumba Sinyan asked the High Court to move her from the part of Mile 2 prison meant for guilty people.

Her lawyer, Sagar Twun, said on Tuesday that Sinyan should stay with other people who wait for trial. The law says anyone not found guilty must be kept apart from those already guilty.

The state's lawyer denied these claims. M Sanyang told the court that Sinyan broke prison rules after a fight with another person. The prison moved her as a punishment, which they can do by law.

The court will decide what happens next on February 17, 2025. Sinyan faces murder charges for the death of Lamarana Jallow in 2022.

The case shows how prisons handle people before they go to trial. Sinyan says the law gives her rights since no court has found her guilty yet.
