Murkomen whines as Mwau blocks police hiring

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen warned on Thursday that Kenya faces a critical police shortage, but a High Court order has blocked the planned recruitment of 10,000 officers. The Employment and Labour Relations Court suspended the hiring process on Oct. 2 after John Harun Mwau filed a petition against the Inspector General of Police and the National Police Service Commission. Lady Justice Hellen Wasilwa directed authorities to respond within seven days, and the case is scheduled to return to court on October 21.

Murkomen stated that the government aimed to hire 10,000 personnel to replace retired officers and enhance security operations ahead of the 2027 General Election. The cabinet secretary expressed frustration with the judicial intervention, noting that police recruitment had proceeded without legal challenges for four years. He emphasized the urgency of filling vacancies to secure the nation's borders and maintain public safety across the country.
