Museveni 80 pledges billion dollar leap as Uganda faces 45-year rule

President Yoweri Museveni grabbed his party ticket for another presidential run. The 80-year-old leader wants to stretch his power grip to 45 years total. His supporters chant slogans telling him not to leave the main electricity line. Museveni says millions of Ugandans demand he stays around longer. The ruling party picked him without any competition.

Museveni has controlled Uganda since 1986 after winning a bush war. He promises to push the country from lower-middle-income status to high-middle-income levels. The president claims Uganda earned 61 billion dollars and created millions of jobs. Coffee exports bring just 2.50 dollars per kilogram as raw beans. Germany makes 65 billion dollars from coffee without growing any plants.

The 2026 election season heats up with official dates confirmed. Presidential nominations happen between October 2 and 3 next year. Polling starts January 12 and runs through February 9. Bobi Wine from the National Unity Platform will likely challenge Museveni again. The 42-year-old musician turned politician came second during the 2021 race.

Critics attack Museveni for removing age limits and weakening democracy. Urban youth support has dropped for the longtime ruler. Museveni tells young people to focus on wealth creation instead of job hunting. He believes God will help Uganda make the economic leap forward. The president remains confident about winning another five-year term.
