Museveni approves Helcraw prepaid water meter plant to boost Uganda water access

President Yoweri Museveni approved plans for a domestic prepaid water meter production facility during meetings with international investors. Helcraw Electrical from Zimbabwe partnered with Chinese firm Liaison Technologies to propose the manufacturing venture. Director Brendon Jere demonstrated how similar systems transformed water access across Zimbabwe through improved revenue collection and conservation practices. The technology enables consumers to purchase water credits before usage rather than receiving monthly bills. Museveni praised the initiative as beneficial for industrial development and employment creation.

The president instructed Minister Haruna Kasolo to expedite licensing procedures and secure appropriate land allocation for the proposed factory. Officials anticipate the facility will supply water metering technology throughout East Africa beyond Uganda's borders. Museveni simultaneously endorsed agricultural irrigation infrastructure development for the Teso region during the same discussions. The water meter plant aligns with government objectives to expand manufacturing capabilities and enhance essential service delivery systems. Local production will reduce import dependency while supporting regional smart water management initiatives.
