Museveni muscles into 2026 ring, Kampala cops cage rivals

Uganda prepares for presidential candidate nominations this Tuesday and Wednesday at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Lubowa. Candidates must present nomination documents, voter registration proof, district endorsements, academic credentials, and pay twenty million shillings. Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama restricts entry to two representatives per candidate and warns against large gatherings. Police implement traffic diversions around Lubowa beginning at 5 a.m. on both days.

President Yoweri Museveni received a nomination on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m., representing the National Resistance Movement party. Opposition parties complete final preparations with Forum for Democratic Change presenting Nandala Mafabi as their candidate. Alliance for National Transformation leader Mugisha Muntu continues gathering the required district signatures while National Unity Platform's Robert Kyagulanyi submits additional endorsements after initial rejection. Security forces increase their presence throughout Kampala and issue warnings against unauthorized assemblies during the nomination period.
