Museveni scrubs fishing committees, swaps them for marine battalion

A presidential order just scrapped every lake landing site committee in the country. President Yoweri Museveni told the military to immediately dissolve those groups after fishermen complained for years about how they operated. He also renamed the Fisheries Protection Unit to the 155 Marines Battalion, putting it under regular UPDF marine command. The acting defense spokesman, Colonel Chris Magezi, posted the directive, stating General Muhoozi Kainerugaba will enforce it.

New committees will form within three months, with oversight from Generals Sam Okiding and Richard Otto. These groups must include local fishermen and investors, a setup meant to be more transparent. Major Joseph Ssebukeera takes over the new marine battalion, while the former unit commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Tukahirwa, gets reassigned to a presidential advisor's office. The defense ministry thanked her for her service. The whole shake-up aims to fix coordination issues and rebuild trust with lakeside communities who felt mistreated by the old system.
