Musowa rises as DPP tightens grip

Victor Musowa won election as First Deputy Speaker of Malawi's National Assembly after receiving 134 votes from legislators on Friday. The Democratic Progressive Party representative from Mulanje Bale defeated Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere of the Malawi Congress Party, who secured 60 votes, and Catherine Mzumala of the United Transformation Movement, who gained 24 votes.

The outcome demonstrates substantial backing for the Democratic Progressive Party in parliament and elevates Musowa to a leadership role overseeing legislative procedures. His responsibilities include assisting the Speaker and maintaining fairness in parliamentary debates.

The result marks a milestone for Mulanje Bale as its lawmaker assumes a national position. Observers view the election as evidence of Democratic Progressive Party strength in the chamber and confidence in Musowa's ability to facilitate orderly legislative work.
