Mussa Azzan Zungu elected new Speaker of Tanzania’s Parliament

Tanzania's National Assembly elected Mussa Azzan Zungu as Speaker, with approximately 378 lawmakers casting ballots in Dodoma. The 73-year-old CCM politician brings two decades of consecutive parliamentary service and has previously held the position of Deputy Speaker since 2022.

Zungu's credentials include chairing the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security for over 16 years and serving as Parliament Chairperson from 2012 to 2021. His technical background features qualifications as a Principal Aircraft Maintenance Engineer through training at the Military College of Aviation spanning 1979 to 1982. He has participated in legislative study visits across more than 23 countries and represented Tanzania at African, Caribbean and Pacific Joint Parliamentary Assembly meetings with the European Union.

The veteran legislator also led the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Tanzania Branch at international forums and served as Minister of State in the Vice President's Office for Union and Environment matters.
