Mutare teacher jailed as crash kills headmaster and peer

Magistrate Poterai Gwezhira sentenced teacher Jabulani Mwenzva to 24 months imprisonment for culpable homicide following a deadly collision. The 56-year-old Rowa Primary School educator received a suspended sentence of six months with additional driving prohibition. Courts found Mwenzva guilty after his Toyota Hiace crossed into oncoming traffic on Mafararikwa-22 Miles Road during July last year. The head-on crash killed headmaster Trevor Mtisi and colleague Portia Dhliwayo while injuring ten passengers.

Prosecutor Deliwe Masibhera presented evidence showing Mwenzva traveled at excessive speeds before losing vehicle control. The defendant encroached into the opposite lane at a sharp curve near the 45-kilometer marker around 10am. Emergency responders transported surviving passengers to medical facilities while both vehicles underwent mechanical inspection. Magistrate Gwezhira determined negligent driving caused the preventable tragedy.
