Mutharika sends team to beg Trump for USAID cash

President Arthur Peter Mutharika announced on October 4 that Malawi will send a delegation to the United States to address development priorities after receiving congratulations from President Donald Trump. The announcement came at his inauguration at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. USAID program suspensions affected health centers in Mchinji and Nkhata Bay, and they created medicine shortages that forced residents to travel long distances for care.

Mutharika said the delegation will work to restore suspended programs and secure investment for governance improvements. Development economist Ellen Banda stated that international partnerships provide essential financing and expertise for economic recovery. The government aims to address food insecurity and foreign exchange shortages through renewed cooperation with the United States.

Farmers like Peter Mbewe hope restored programs will provide irrigation systems and agricultural training. Mutharika pledged responsible resource management and assured that assistance would reach vulnerable communities. The mission seeks to rebuild investor confidence and strengthen institutions through transparency and accountability.
