Myanmar, Thailand hold 26th meeting on drug control, strengthen cooperation

Top cops from Myanmar and Thailand met in Taunggyi to tackle the drug crisis hitting both countries. Police Lt-Gen Win Zaw Moe led the Myanmar team at the 26th bilateral meeting on drug control. The police chief announced that forces have run 40 special operations against drug traffickers since 2013. A brand new operation kicked off on May 1st this year. Officials are changing tactics as smugglers keep switching their routes.

Myanmar police want to stop dangerous chemicals from reaching drug labs. These chemicals help criminals make illegal drugs that flood the streets. Win Zaw Moe stressed that both countries must work together to block these materials. Border guards are cracking down hard on smuggling networks. The Myanmar leader thanked Thailand for helping with development projects that give farmers better options than growing opium poppies.

Police Lt-Gen Phanurat Lukboon brought 11 Thai officers to the talks. The Myanmar side sent 14 delegates to discuss joint anti-drug efforts. Both teams looked at current drug problems and shared ideas for future teamwork. They talked about catching more drugs, testing seized materials, and helping addicts recover. The Mae Fah Luang Foundation project in Naungtaya Town has already shown great results. Officials agreed that alternative crops can help ethnic communities earn money without growing drugs. Thailand will host the next meeting as both countries promise to keep fighting the drug trade together.
