Mzimba Farmers Hit Oil Cash Jackpot

Esther Sato makes cooking oil from sunflower seeds grown on her farmland. Farmers across Mpherembe village used to sell raw crops at low prices to middlemen. The TRANSFORM Programme gave them machines to process harvests into finished products. Oil presses and maize shellers help families earn more money from their work. Seven farmer groups received equipment under a payment plan that requires 10 percent upfront costs.

Senior Chief Mpherembe urged community members to use the machines wisely and keep some products for their families. Charity Chaula from Kamkwamba Model Village watched her maize sheller work for the first time. The program teaches food safety and business skills, as well as equipment training. Dr. Beatrice Mbakaya believes value addition will stop young people from leaving the country. Local communities can build stronger economies through processing their crops.

The Royal Norwegian Embassy provides the K200 million revolving fund through Norwegian Church Aid. Paul Mmanjamwada emphasized that communities share responsibility for maintaining the equipment. The Kanthete Cooperative sold its entire oil batch within hours of production. TRANSFORM Programme reaches 150,000 households across five districts. Farmers prove that Malawi's wealth lies in people who can transform raw materials into valuable products.
