Mzuzu motorists stuck in fuel queues urge MEC to open polling stations

Fuel shortages plague Mzuzu two days before Malawi's September 16, 2025, tripartite elections. Motorists queue at empty filling stations for multiple days without success. James Mwambande has been waiting at Petroda station for three days since Thursday morning. The crisis forces drivers to abandon their vehicles overnight while hoping for fuel deliveries. Ernest Kachingwe and other motorists request that the Malawi Electoral Commission establish voting centers at service stations.

All fourteen filling stations across Mzuzu report complete depletion of petrol supplies. Black market vendors exploit the shortage by selling fuel at K15,000 per liter. A National Oil Company official confirms little prospect for immediate improvement. The timing threatens voter participation just hours before polling begins. Citizens fear disenfranchisement if authorities fail to address the transportation crisis affecting their constitutional rights.
