Nairobi grants period days, boosts women’s workplace relief

Nairobi County just approved a new policy for its women employees. Governor Johnson Sakaja and his cabinet endorsed a plan for two monthly menstrual health days. The county government stated that this addresses health challenges impacting work performance and overall service delivery.

Women form over half of the county workforce. Officials cited studies showing that a majority experience menstrual pain severe enough to hurt productivity, leading to presenteeism and reduced efficiency. They described the move as an evidence-based step supporting gender equality and decent work.

Clear guidelines and privacy safeguards will be implemented across all departments, with monitoring handled through existing human resource systems. Nairobi follows examples from countries like Japan, South Korea, and Zambia, which have established menstrual leave entitlements in labor laws.
