NAMAs Plagued by Low Attendance and Poor Timeliness

The National Arts Music Awards stands as Zimbabwe's premier artistic celebration, yet the recent ceremony fell short of the expected grandeur. Attendance at Harare Hippodrome remained sparse for what should represent the country's prestigious cultural showcase. Many honorees chose alternative engagements instead of attending, sending representatives, or completely missing award collection opportunities. Winky D never claimed multiple recognitions, including the coveted People's Choice accolade.

Artists seem to diminish their respect for NAMA's significance, preferring performance bookings elsewhere rather than participating directly. This annual event aims to celebrate exceptional achievements across various creative disciplines, acknowledging artistic merit throughout Zimbabwe. The anticipated red carpet experience lacked impact as celebrities arrived behind schedule. Despite these shortcomings, several performers delivered memorable showcases during the evening.

Oriyano captivated attendees who demanded additional performances, Nisha T demonstrated impressive musical talent, and Jah Prayzah maintained his reputation through consistent excellence. Additional acts included Shashl, Atenda Chinx, Bagga, Sylent Nqo, Probeatz, Misheck Mahendere, and diverse musical groups alongside Denilson, the Saxophonist. Dance category recipients featured Celine Madziva earning Outstanding Female Dancer and Tichaona "Hero" Chikara receiving male counterpart recognition.

Khaya Arts Productions secured Outstanding Dance Group honors, with Future Dube acknowledged for choreography excellence. Visual arts celebrated Moffat Takadiwa and Portia Zvavahera as outstanding artists, and Kundai Nathan emerged as a promising talent. The 6th Venice Biennale exhibition curated by Fadzai Veronica Muchemwa earned significant recognition among international presentations. Literary achievements highlighted Ray Mawerera's debut publication, "Zagamo the War Within," plus diverse written works across fiction and non-fiction categories.

Film industry standouts included Munashe Goromonzi and Skanyiso Ngwenya for acting performances, and Leopold Tapiwa Vengesa directed award-winning music visualization. Television productions recognized included "The DNA Show" by Tinashe Mugabe alongside notable film projects "Dollar" and "Nhoroondo." The music category celebrated Thamsanqa Moyo as an outstanding female musician, Hillary Marufu earned a male equivalent distinction, and Gift Kudakwashe Hombarume received breakthrough artist recognition.

Special recognitions presented throughout the ceremony acknowledged Event Hulks for promotion excellence, and international artistic ambassador Masimba Hwati represented Zimbabwe from Poland. Prince Edward School earned service commendation, Partson Chimbodza received personality accolades, Philip Svosve gained lifetime achievement status. Wallace Chirumiko captured audience appreciation through the popular vote designation despite physical absence from the proceedings.
