Namibia landed the number five spot for the safest African country when it comes to money laundering and sketchy financial stuff, according to the Basel AML index that just dropped. The Financial Intelligence Centre boss, Bryan Eiseb, said their score kept getting better over three years, going from 5.09 down to 4.78, where lower numbers mean you have your act together more.
The ranking helps the country hit its goal of cutting shady money flows from 9 percent of GDP down to 5 percent over the next few years. Eiseb mentioned they still need to tighten up transparency around who actually owns companies and finish a big risk assessment, but the progress shows regulators and enforcement agencies have been grinding on compliance and coordination across the whole financial system.
