NamWater Reports Dramatic Dam Level Rises Across Namibia

Water levels went up across dams throughout central and southern Namibia during the past seven days. The Namibia Water Corporation shared this news Monday as part of their regular updates about water storage across the country. Numbers show that Naute Dam near Keetmanshoop gained the most water, adding more than nine million cubic meters since last Monday. Neckartal Dam, located near the same town, added about 6.2 million cubic meters during the same period.

Von Bach Dam near Okahandja collected 3.1 million cubic meters of fresh water, and Swakoppoort Dam, nearby, increased its supply by 1.7 million cubic meters. These central region dams help supply Windhoek with water. Von Bach, Swakoppoort, and Omatako dams together hold 52.6 million cubic meters right now, a huge improvement from last year when they contained only 31 million cubic meters of water.

NamWater reports many dams stand at better levels compared to 2023. Von Bach jumped from 11% last year to 35.3% today. Omatako made an even bigger leap from just 1% up to 27.8%. Hardap increased from 12.8% to 22.2%. Several other dams showed positive changes as well. Naute moved from 40.5% to 44.2%, Daan Viljoen grew from 5.7% to 9.8%, and Olushandja climbed from 38% to 53.7%.

Some dams saw their levels decrease compared to last year. Swakoppoort fell slightly from 39.8% to 37.5%. Neckartal dropped from 84% to 81.7%. Oanob declined from 43% to 32.8%. Otjivero Main decreased from 4.8% to 3.3%. A few dams remain extremely low despite recent rains. Dreihuk stands at just 4.4% after being empty last year. Tilda Viljoen sits empty at 0% compared to 6.7% previously. The Goreangab Dam remains full at 100.5%.
