Nana Yaa Jantuah blames suspended Chief Justice Torkonoo for youth imprisonment over petty crimes

A government official criticized the suspended top judge for keeping young criminals behind bars. Nana Yaa Jantuah works at the presidential office and spoke against Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkonoo on television Thursday. She said Torkonoo failed to support a law that would have freed many prisoners. The proposed legislation offers community work instead of jail time for minor crimes. Jantuah believes this approach would help young offenders rebuild their lives.

Prison statistics show troubling patterns across Ghana according to Jantuah. Seven out of every ten inmates fall between ages 18 and 35. These men should be working and supporting families rather than serving sentences. Many committed small offenses like taking farm animals from neighbors. Community service could teach valuable lessons without destroying futures.

Jantuah accused Torkonoo of political favoritism during her tenure. She claimed the chief justice helped the New Patriotic Party win court cases unfairly. Opposition parties faced constant defeats when they challenged government actions. Other judges nicknamed Torkonoo for always voting the same way as her colleagues. Jantuah said personal interests guided judicial decisions rather than fairness.

Parliamentary committees currently investigate three separate complaints against Torkonoo. Citizens filed petitions demanding her removal from the highest court position. The suspended judge denies all wrongdoing and calls the accusations false. She maintains that critics misunderstand proper judicial behavior. Legal experts will determine whether the evidence supports removing her from office permanently.
