Natalie Vock drives Mesa ray tracing gains for AMD RX 7000 and RX 9000

AMD graphics cards have received significant performance gains in ray tracing through recent updates to the Mesa library. Valve contractor Natalie Vock submitted optimizations before the Mesa 25.2 code freeze deadline. The patches target RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 architectures found in Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series cards. Internal testing reveals RX 9000 series cards achieve 14 percent faster performance in Quake II RTX. These improvements narrow the performance gap between AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards on Linux systems.

The updates introduce specialized hardware instructions for each GPU generation. RDNA 3 cards use ds_bvh_stack_rtn instructions while RDNA 4 cards employ ds_bvh_stack_push8_pop1_rtn commands. These low-level optimizations enhance how graphics processors handle ray tracing calculations. The patches reduce memory operations and boost overall efficiency. Both current and previous generation Radeon cards benefit from these driver enhancements.
