Nation Mourns Mvundura Declared Hero At 81

Zimbabwe's President Honors Late Political Leader with National Hero Status.

John Mvundura, a leader in Zimbabwe's ruling party, Zanu PF, died last week at age 81. President Mnangagwa named him a National Hero for his service to the country.

Mike Nyambuya brought the news to the Mvundura family at their home in Harare. He came with Mike Madiro, another party official. They shared how the President praised Mvundura's work during Zimbabwe's fight for freedom.

"The President picked Ambassador Mvundura for our highest honor," Nyambuya said. "He gave his life to make Zimbabwe better, both during and after we gained our freedom."

The government will soon release the burial plans. Nyambuya thinks Mvundura might be laid to rest on Wednesday. He would share the ceremony with two other leaders, Solomon Siziba and Chen Chimutengwende.

"He stood up for what he believed in," Nyambuya said about Mvundura. "He fought hard to free our country."

The family felt grateful for this recognition. George Mvundura, the ambassador's brother, thanked both the President and local party leaders for their support.

Janet Mvundura remembered her father as a kind man who cared deeply for his family. "He wanted us to live right and keep our good name," she said.

Mvundura leaves behind his wife, Perpetual, and ten children.
