President Ruto said nice things about Senator William Cheptumo, who passed away. He called him a leader who always helped his country when needed.
At the funeral held at Arap Moi School in Baringo County, Ruto named Cheptumo a hero. He talked about how Cheptumo helped fix problems after the 2007 election fights.
"We were part of ODM with Musalia Mudavadi. Our party asked us to talk to others. Cheptumo helped a lot in those talks. The talks brought peace back to our country. I worked with him as a fellow lawmaker, as Deputy President, and as President for a short time," Ruto said.
The President described Cheptumo as someone who cared deeply about being a good leader and who loved the people he served.
Ruto added that the late leader knew his goals and never stopped caring for the people who voted for him.
"Cheptumo was a great leader who loved his people. He felt strongly about leadership. I have met many leaders who lack interest. But Cheptumo had real passion. He knew what he wanted. He always looked out for those who elected him. When the nation called, he stood up ready to help," he said.
Cheptumo died on February 15, 2025. He was 57 years old. He was being treated at a hospital in Nairobi when he died.
He worked as a lawyer. From 2008 to 2013, he served as a Member of Parliament for Baringo North.
The UDA party picked him to represent Baringo County in the Senate during the 2022 election.
He beat Gideon Moi from the Kanu party in that race.
He led the Senate group on National Security, Defense, and Foreign Relations.
The Senator started the Cheptumo and Company Advocates law firm.
Before that, he worked for the Central Bank of Kenya and Industrial and Commercial Development Cooperation.
